Finals for Packaging Brief and Evaluation of Module

These are my finals for this project.  The top is my final visual of what my box will look like.
Underneath is the net with all stickers in place.
I enjoyed this project, but not as much as others. I don't think packaging is one of my strong points, and I don't enjoy it as much as others. I do however feel like I have learned a lot in this project, between how to create a 3D visual using illustrator and photoshop and how to create a net using illustrator. This knowledge will help me in my future career.

Weekly Progression

This week was different to normal, having to hand in on wednesday instead of friday.

Throughout the week I first did my net, and some development on the net but trying it on paper and cutting things out etc to see if it would work.

The first image is my original design. I used different colors to show where to fold, which are glue tabs, and which are the top bottom and sides.

Next I moved onto developing this by creating it. The first one didn't work very well as I missed some glue tabs but I soon overcame this with a re work.

While I was creating my final on the pc, I changed a couple of bits on my design, so I went back and changed these in my sketchbook. I changed the color of the size stickers to all grey because I think this color compliments the rest of my design better.

Weekly Progression

This week has been a very busy week.

Firstly, I finished my initial ideas for the design to go on the box.

Here are the ideas. I like the shape of the one with the red surrounding it, but I don't think any of these ideas really stand out.

I've also started my development.

I was looking at how to fit the size, what it is etc onto the sticker but I don't think that will work. I like how it works on he first one on the left, but I think I need to change the shapes and maybe the color. I also decided to change the colors of the overall design. I think it stands out better in the yellow.

I've also finalized my idea and did my final idea.

I decided not to have all the information on the sticker, but just the box logo. I have chosen to do 3 smaller stickers for the size, color etc.

Saturday 7 December 2013

Weekly Progression

This week I chose which kind of box shape I am going with, in which I have chosen just to do a plain box, which is thin enough to get though a letter box, but it thick enough to fit socks, briefs and trunks in.

I've also started designing what I am going to put on the packaging to allow customers to tell what is in the box, without giving too much information away to the person/ company who are delivering the items.

These are what I've come up with so far. I quite like how plain a subtle the first ones are, but I also like the one with the blue however I think this makes it too obvious.

I think my time management for this week has been okay, I haven't got quite as much work done as I thought, because of presentations etc, but I will catch up on everything next week.

Friday 6 December 2013

Exhibitions

So today I have been researching exhibitions on around Newcastle. I've found a few that I want to go to. The first one being at the Baltic by Thomas Bayrle. His exhibition spans his whole career and I am keen to take a look. The second that has caught my eye is the Laing Art Gallery has a collection of art work from the 18th and 19th century and I am sure I can take inspiration from some of the work shown. Third and final at the Hatton Gallery they have the 'Merzbarn Wall' by Kurt Schwitters, which was his final piece or work which he constructed from 1947 to 1948 in the Lake District and was shipped to the gallery in 1965. Once I get time to go to the galleries I will feedback on here what I think of them.

Saturday 30 November 2013

Weekly Progression

I have started my initial ideas this week. I've started looking at different materials and different size, shapes etc. I think this is what should be looked at first before I start designing anything for it.

These are the ideas I came up with. I didn't want to do something really fancy, I just want to keep everything simple.

We also had a lecture on how to create a net for a box in illustrator. It's not as hard as I thought it was going to be. I think I have worked well this week and not had to worry too much about my time management.

Friday 22 November 2013

Weekly Progression

This week I finalized all my research and presented it. Here's some images from my research.
I chose all these because they're very quirky designs. I like how original they are and how colorful they are.

After I did my research and presented it I started in my sketchbook. I started off by doing a brain storm of how to come up with a unique piece of packaging.

I think my time management this week has been good. I didn't overrun on my research and started doing my initial ideas on time.

Packaging Design Brief Introduction

Today we received a full introduction to our new brief, NCI562 Packaging Design. We have to design a box for a company called Box, under Monogram London. They want us to design something that can fit through a letter box, but can also fit a minimum of 3 of these products: briefs, trunks, v-neck undershirt, crew-neck undershirt or socks. It also has to have www.iwantbox.com on it somewhere. It also has to have a rich brand quality feel for the end user. The only technical restrictions on this brief is that it must be cost efficient and have a sleeve or label or some sort to differentiate the products that are in there.

Today I also finalized my research that I did whilst off. Throughout the week I am going to start my initial ideas.

Monday 4 November 2013

Inspiration

This is some of the packaging that I find inspires me, because of quirky/ cute they are.

Packaging Research Task

Last week we were set a task to research for the next module coming up as we are now off for 2 weeks and then when we get back we have an experience of work week. I am going to look at different areas of packaging like food, clothing, alcohol, DIY, dvd etc. I will find all my examples and finalize them when I go back.

Weekly Progression/ Evaluation of Brief

This week has been a very long week. As well as my digital skills task, I have also completed development of the images for my final, completed my final visuals, printed everything out and handed in yesterday. I am quite happy with my outcomes for this project, I have learnt a lot. I think I need quite a bit more practice when it comes to type appearances on illustrator and tabs/ paragraph styles on InDesign. I tried to use some of things I learned in digital skills, so that people can see that I am using what I learn. I am extremely confident in Photoshop now, a lot more confident in InDesign and quite confident in Illustrator. I also think that my time management for this project has worked quite well. I organized myself so that I wouldn't over do one thing and under do another.

This is my final for this project.

Digital Skills Task 5 - Starbucks Frappaccino Menu

This week we learned how to create a menu on InDesign, using some of the skills we have already learned in photoshop. The main thing we learned for this is how to use tabs/ paragraph styles. I found paragraph styles easier to use than I did the appearance palette on illustrator. I did find the tabs option quite easy to use, but I think I need more practice before I understand it fully. I still also need practice on the sun burst, as I am not very good at this.

Saturday 19 October 2013

Weekly Progression

This week has been a tough one to get my head around, on the digital skills half of things. I need to keep practicing with illustrator to understand these better.

I haven't just done that though, I have also completed my development for the live brief and started my final. As I've started the final I've decided that I am going to hand draw the pieces of food for the banners, as I think this will give a more quirky effect, and so that I am not using photography that I don't have copyright for.

Friday 18 October 2013

Digital Skills Task 4 - Walls Ice Cream Ad

This week was a cross over between photoshop and illustrator. I put my photo editing skills to use on the image of the ice cream in photoshop before transferring it to illustrator. For the illustrator part we were taught how to create shapes using path finder to merge them, how to create a circle that looks like a sun burst which fades off, how to use the 3D effect to change the perspective on the parasol at the top of the page and how to use the appearance palette to change the type. I found this a bit harder to learn as I find it hard to understand illustrator. The appearance palette part was the hardest, but I think if I keep practicing I should be alright.

Saturday 12 October 2013

Weekly Progression

This week I learnt a lot for the Adidas poster, I enjoyed learning all those things, although I need some practice as I am not 100% confident on putting it all into practice.

As well as this task I've also started initial ideas for my banners, taking into consideration what I researched into. I want my finals to be very simple, but bright and appealing (eye-catching).

I've also started developing my ideas, thinking about all the skills I have learned in digital skills so far.

Friday 11 October 2013

Digital Skills Task 3 - Adidas Poster

This week we have learned how to create a poster using gradient maps, gradients, using layer masks, erasing using a gradient, overlaying images using blend modes, and importing text from illustrator which has been extruded and beveled to give it a 3D effect. I think I did well with this, although the image on the right of the woman with the tennis racket I found hard, as I couldn't get rid of the black background easy, and therefore had to make it extra bright, to hide this.

Saturday 5 October 2013

Weekly Progression

This week has been very bright! I enjoyed learning how to do the different effects in photoshop.

That wasn't the only thing I did this week though. I also completed putting together my research for the live brief, and I also put it into a PDF presentation, ready to present what I'd be looking at to the client and my tutor. I think I did well with my time management this week, as I didn't have to rush anything to get it done on time.

Friday 4 October 2013

Digital Skills Task 2 - Absolut Poster

This weeks digital skills task was to create a poster for Absolut vodka. The skills we learned for this was how to create and use a scatter brush in photoshop and how to use a clipping mask correctly to drop a colored box over the vodka bottle to make it seem like it was very bright, using the correct blending mode also helped this. After completing the poster we then learned how to use an adjustment layer to change the color of the whole poster without having to redo the whole thing.

Introduction to Contextual Studies

Today we were also given the module guide for Contextual Studies.

The question for this year that I have chosen is the same as last year, the only difference is that it is 3,000 words not 2,000.

Saturday 28 September 2013

Weekly Progression

This week has been pretty interesting seeing all the different ways images can be edited in photoshop. I already knew the basics, but this has helped me understand way more on how to make my images look a lot more professional.

As well as doing my digital skills task I also started research into the live brief, set by Instant print. I started looking into Instant print, as a company, and what they already have on their website. I also started looking into other examples of banners for food places to see how other people set them up. I've looked into main food brands like greggs, mcdonalds etc and also instant prints competitors on the market. I have only started looking at these, I haven't started putting them together in a document yet.

Friday 27 September 2013

Digital Skills Task 1 - Image Styling

This week the Digital Skills tasks were 4 different Image Styles. These include color overlay, over exposure, gradient overlay and changing the tonality. We were given lectures and demonstrations on how to do all these and then had to do our own version and evaluate them.

Tuesday 24 September 2013

Work Based Learning Introduction

Today we were given an introduction to our Work Based Learning module. It's not going to be the same as last year, as it's going to run along side our other projects, with our final submission being in march.

We have to get ourselves a file and document everything, from CV workshops, to building our CV, to our progress in work placements and documenting all our live briefs from outside clients.

This should help me understand how industry works.

Instant Print/ Digital Skills

This week we have started our first brief/ live brief of the year. It is called Digital Skills Application. We are required to complete a range of different tasks, one for every week of the module. We then should apply these skills to a template for an online print company (Instantprint). This can be anything from business cards, to banners or even a poster. We can also choose our category as well and I have chose to do food and drink. This live brief did have a number of restrictions, as this is just a template to go on their website. We had to take into consideration the number of layers we used and the colors/ fonts we chose to use.

Final Essay

At the beginning of the year, my first project was entitled Branding and Corporate image. I joined the course a month after it started, so I missed all introductions to everything etc, but I don’t think this has made an effect on my work. In this project I think my final piece for the School of Creative Industries logo was done to the best standard I could achieve, however my final logo design for the Newcastle music hub could have been thought about more, as I just went with a generic headphone idea, which I don’t think I thought outside of the box for. I learned in this project that to come up with a good logo, you have to think differently to designers, otherwise if you don’t have something that makes you stand out from the crowd, then clients won’t be attracted to your work.
Digital skills were a chance I had to apply the stand out the crowd note, and that’s what I tried to do. The idea I had for the logo was a scribble behind the T.M. and it all in lowercase letters so that it looked like a child had wrote it. The final piece that I came up with didn’t look like that at all. The fancy typography I used underneath for the strapline was too big and looked out of place. On my poster, the photographer didn’t listen to what photos I wanted, but didn’t show me so I didn’t find this out until I had been sent the photos. I think if I had of known how to use InDesign properly at the time my poster would have been laid out better and I would have liked my final outcome. I learned that in order to get something you like you have to make mistakes in the process.
By the time we got too after Christmas we started Typographical and Editorial design, this project taught me how to use and apply the grid system to lay out a magazine page properly. I also learned how to use photo captions, headlines, subheadings and by lines. A headline being the main title, subheading being something that makes it stand out, and by line to tell you who the story is by. I did achieve the learning outcomes in the project. I felt my time management worked well, I kept to the time plan in the brief and did everything weekly so that I didn’t fall behind or get lost, or confused in what I was supposed to do that week. I completed my project on time and handed it in before the deadline on the 22nd of February.
Work based learning 1 was the first brief I found that really challenged me this year. It wasn’t focused as much on the portfolio as normal, but on how you work with 3rd parties, as in the photographer, and the client, which in this case was Tyneside Cinema. We had a briefing off the cinema, and the woman told us that they are 80% specialised film, and 20% mainstream films, which is what keeps people coming to the Tyneside cinema, as they have a reputation for being ‘weird’ and also that when the cinema first opened in 1937 it was a news theatre. She also told us their creative process for between them and their graphic designer, a lot of people like to have a say in the posters etc so the designer has to go in circles before he gets everything right. I took all this into consideration when I was designing my final idea. Me and my photographers had the same idea of what we wanted, so we didn’t have to do different shoots. I wanted some different expressions, which I got, but I found it hard to communicate with the photographers as they didn’t really listen well. If I was to do anything differently in this project I would try and communicate better with the photographers and the model, to get a better picture to work with. I wouldn’t make any changes to my final piece, I like how it turned out. I like the typography, although feedback from people has made it clear you can’t really see the slight gradient which I put in the background. I completed this project on time, and I learned from it that working with other people and bringing more people into the project makes it harder to work as you have to communicate between yous.
The final project of the year is called Practice Enrichment, and this project is an illustration module. I like this module, because it means I can do a lot of cartoons, and hand drawing things, as it means messing around with different illustration styles, mixed media etc. I chose to do The Wind in the Willows, and the first thing I did was buy the book so I knew the story. I’m not quite finished but I understand what the story is about. I have kept to the time plan for this module, and did everything by the week that it’s stated. This project had a clear flow through the whole thing. And I could put all photoshop, illustrator and indesign skills into use. Photoshop was used to apply different styles, and change pictures around etc, Illustrator was used for typography and indesign was used to put everything together. I wouldn’t make any changes to this module. This module has made me sway more to this kind of style for what I want to do as a career.
